As of July 1, 2016, the Australian student visa system has been streamlined into two main categories: the Student Visa (Subclass 500) and the Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590).

The Student Visa (Subclass 500) is designed for international students seeking to enroll in full-time courses at accredited Australian institutions. This visa permits students to remain in Australia until the completion of their studies or for up to five years, whichever comes first. Additionally, eligible family members can join the student by applying for the Student Guardian Subclass 590 Visa.

Key features of the Student Visa Subclass 500 include the ability to study full-time at a CRICOS registered institution, with eligible family members allowed to accompany the student. Students can also work for up to 40 hours per fortnight during their studies and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks. There are no work restrictions for those pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees by research.

To be eligible for the Student Visa Subclass 500, applicants must fulfill certain requirements, including obtaining a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE) from a CRICOS registered education provider, arranging suitable accommodation if under 18 years old, securing Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), and demonstrating Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) status.

Furthermore, applicants must meet English language proficiency standards through approved tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE, and demonstrate financial capacity to cover the costs of studying in Australia. Health requirements must also be met through a medical examination conducted by a registered health practitioner.

Overall, the Australian student visa program offers a pathway for international students to access world-class education while experiencing the rich cultural and lifestyle offerings of Australia.
